Ellen Stewart's La MaMa art space was once a basement coffee house in 1961 to showcase theatre.
Shortly after it's opening, La MaMa quickly emerged into an theatre company which according to the website " La MaMa is the place where emerging artists learn from established artists and where artists from around the globe share work and ideas."
Such great talent as Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro and Diane Lane, just to name a few, have performed at this space.
